David Hill

I’ve doodled all my life, about 30ish years ago I started drawing as a hobby, then it was mainly pastels & graphite pencils.

Like many of us, life then got in the way as the children grew up. I got back to the drawing about 3-4 years ago, this time using coloured pencils, coloured inks, and artists fine liner pens.

My method of working is to carry a camera, when out walking the dogs, visiting places, or just wandering around the garden (I’m a keen gardener), taking photographs of anything that might supply an inspiration for a drawing. I then trawl through these to decide which image inspires, what aspects of the image I’ll include in the composition, and what media I’ll draw it in. If I can’t decide I opt for an abstract, these are my “holding” patterns.

Whenever I can’t make a decision on what to draw, or where a current drawing goes next, I go back to an abstract. Consequently abstracts are “active” for many years. Apart from the abstract “holding patterns” all of my drawings are of botanical subjects one way or another.
