I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to paint.
Work and raising a family left little time for anything else. Early retirement gave me the gift of time. This was my time to paint.
I am self-taught and have only scratched the surface of my art journey so far. I mostly paint in oils which has taught me to slow down and contemplate my subject. Raised on the west coast of Ireland and lived most of my adult life in Sussex I have a wealth of beautiful land and sea scapes to draw from. Therefore landscapes are my subject of choice.
I try to paint with a limited palette so often have to opt for ‘poetic license’ which is the coolest thing about painting. I mostly use brushes with the odd appearance of a palette knife which I find can sometimes bring my painting to life.
As most paintings start with the sky I have learned to ‘look up’ wherever I am and take in the awesomeness of what’s above us. If I do a good sky this gives me the confidence to carry on!
